24 killed in Palpa mishap identified so far
PALPA, Aug 21 - Altogether 24 out of 25 persons killed in Monday’s bus accident in Palpa district have been identified so far, police involved in rescue operation said.
. One of the three, who were in critical condition, Yuwa Regmi, a resident of Rimuwa VDC-8, have been referred to the capital for further treatment, said the hospital sources. While the other two critically injured Himlal Bika from Mankot-6 Gulmi and Sher Singh Thapa from Juvung in Gulmi districts are being treated in the Mission Hospital. Thirty-one injured are under going treatment in the Mission Hospital at Tansen, the district headquarters. Most of them have head injuries. Twenty-Five commuters have returned home after treatment.
It has been confirmed that the number of passengers traveling in the bus was 81, including those inside the bus and on the top of the bus. The bus (Lu 1 Kha 3076) was going to Tamghas, Gulmi district headquarters, from Butwal when it veered off the Palpa-Tamghas road and plunge some 300 meters down into a stream.
16 died on the spot, 6 passengers died while being rushed to hospital and three more died while undergoing treatment.“The accident occurred after the driver suddenly accelerated the bus near a landslide site “an injured passenger said.
The bus driver admitted that the speed led to the accident but it was “to escape stones rolling down from the hills.”
He is now in the police custody.
Meanwhile, blood is getting scarce in Palpa.
"The mission hospital lacks enough blood for the injured ones. So we have requested the people to donate blood," said DSP Bhim Prasad Dhakal.
